Kaplan University Testimonial by Monica Lewis

Kaplan University
B.A. in Psychology, 2011

Howdy everyone! My name is Monica. After graduating in 1990 from high school in a north Texas town, I made a life changing decision to go back to school online. The road already traveled, yielded many wrong turns and traffic jams, including a life altering event causing permanent disability for the rest of my life.

Before deciding to earn a degree online, my life seemed as though I had gone as far down the road to success as I could or ever would end up going. It seemed like it was my future to raise three kids on a meager income provided monthly in the form of a disability check. Then something snapped and in 2006, after much searching on both the internet and in my soul, the decision to attend Kaplan University was made final.

Computer Information Systems seemed so logical and exciting when I first began with Kaplan University. Then as time or should I say a term (ten weeks) went by, I began to question my decision regarding my major. I had to realize that I was no longer young and that my brain had suffered damage previously causing some difficulties in learning. So I began to really soul search my past, present, and future. I realized that I wanted to help others who were trapped in situations that plagued my adult life so frequently in the past. Psychology then became not only a focus for earning and leading a life as a professional helping others, but it also turned into a passion.

Since beginning my journey there has been many obsticals blocking my way. I have dealt with tragedy in my family and suffered many flare-ups with my illness. Caring for three children, an 11-year-old brother, and a terminally ill mom has not been easy while attending school online. Finding time and juggling it all seems to be the hardest obstacle of all and is a constant battle in my life. But the professors at Kaplan not only provide understanding, compassion, and structure, but also help in developing a proficient knowledge in each subject. I can honestly tell you that there is not one professor that I have had that outshines the others. They are all remarkable people and care a great deal about their students and the issues affecting their online education.

My decision to attend online college instead of a traditional one was primarly based on my health and my family circumstances. It has proved to the one of the best decisions I have made in my life. Not only am I able to pick my classes and the times I can attend, but also the convenience of having my books delivered and not having to leave my home to learn is a huge plus.

In 2011 my dream of being a college graduate will become a reality and then my plans of obtaining my PhD will be in motion. I have showed my children that no matter what has happened in your past or what is predicted for your future, it does not mean it has to affect your ability to obtain an education because that is the only thing that this world cannot take from you. Education is everlasting and forever expandable.
