Masters in Counseling
A master's degree in counseling can prepare a student for a career in mental health or substance abuse counseling, family and marriage therapy, rehabilitation, or vocational counseling. Master's programs are typically two full-time years, or 48 to 60 credit hours in length, and require the successful completion of a supervised clinical internship. Though salaries vary based on employer and job title, the highest paying jobs for counselors are usually in private practice or in government agency positions for mental health, substance abuse, and rehab counselors. Career opportunities in the field of counseling are expected to grow by approximately 21 percent by the year 2016.
