Nail Technicians and Manicurists are trained in the large field of cosmetology. As the name suggests, Nail Technicians are specifically trained to work on clients’ hands and feet, giving manicures or pedicures, treatments or nails extensions. All states require nail technicians to be licensed in order to practice, and most students attend a cosmetology school of some type. Students who want to work in very competitive salons, hotels and other locations will most likely need to take additional education courses beyond the licensing process. Full-time Nail Technician training takes less than two years to complete, but an apprenticeship program can take up to three years. Typical coursework includes: sanitation and sterilization, bacteriology, reflexology, skin and nail anatomy, blood, nail diseases and disorders, as well as practical coursework such as table setup, manicuring and pedicuring, professional nail drill procedures, airbrushing nail art, hand and foot massage techniques, and artificial nail work.
