<info>

Animal lovers sometimes find aspects of this work unpleasant, and physically and emotionally demanding.

Most technicians complete a 2-year or 4-year veterinary program and pass a state examination.

Positions available for veterinary technicians are expected to increase.

What does a veterinary technician do?

Veterinary technologists, also known as vet techs, assist veterinarians by performing many routine tasks, such as medical tests, urinalysis, blood counts, dog dental cleaning, and x-rays. In short, a veterinary technologist is the "animal" equivalent to a medical nurse. Most technicians become specialized to a particular group of animals such as dogs and cats, small animals, or exotic zoo animals. Most technicians work in veterinary clinics, but some take jobs with research facilities. The work week for most technicians is the normal 40-hour week.

What is the job outlook for a veterinary technician?

Pet owners are becoming more affluent and more willing to pay for advanced care, so veterinary technician jobs are expected to grow. Veterinary technologist and technician jobs in zoos will likely be more competitive than other fields.

How much money does a veterinary technician make?

The average yearly salary for a veterinary technician is $25,000, with a range from $22,000 to $29,000, depending on experience and location. Health and retirement benefits vary by workplace.

How does one become a veterinary technician?

Persons interested in careers as veterinary technologists and technicians should take as many high school science and math courses as possible. After high school, there are primarily two levels of education and training for entry to this occupation: a 2-year program for veterinary technicians and a 4-year program for veterinary technologists. Most entry-level veterinary technicians have a 2-year associate's degree, from an accredited community college program. Each state regulates veterinary technicians and technologists differently. However, all states require them to pass a credentialing exam after receiving their degree. Technologists and technicians usually begin work as trainees in routine positions under the direct supervision of a veterinarian.
