Physician Assistant
Physician assistants conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, assist in surgery, and write prescriptions. They work in all areas of medicine and in all settings: private practice offices or clinics, hospitals, public health clinics, temporary help agencies, schools, prisons, and home health care agencies. The job outlook for physician assistants is excellent, as health care facilities increasingly use physician assistants to contain costs. Employment is projected to grow by 27 percent between 2006 and 2016. Median salary is $82,319. For those with strong interpersonal skills, a capacity for calm and reasoned judgment, and preferably a science background, a physician assistant degree (B.A. or M.A.) is a first step to a rewarding career.
