Scholarships for Teachers

Whether you are looking into a career as a teacher, teacher assistant, librarian, councilor, or administrator, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that you will need at least an associate's degree. However, under the No Child Left Behind Act, most teachers and educational providers must have a bachelor's or a master's degree.

Higher education can be extremely expensive. As reported by the National Center for Educational Statistics, private institutions charged an average of $27,317 per year and public institutions cost $12,108 for the 2005-2006 year for tuition, room, board and food. Furthermore, according to The College Board, this number increases dramatically each year with students expected to pay from $108 to $1,398 more than last year for this year's tuition and fees, depending on the type of college.

There are several ways to overcome this financial hurdle. One of the best options is scholarships. Higher education scholarships are given to students for a variety of reasons including:

  • Achievement
  • Financial hardship
  • Interests
  • Intended program of study
  • Employment
  • Community involvement

Furthermore, several sectors of the community and state give out hundreds of different scholarships. In fact, there are over 2.9 million scholarships available that equal nearly $16 billion per year. There is no reason why you cannot benefit from the various scholarship programs.

A Scholarship in the Education Sector

Obtaining a degree in education is one of the smartest educational moves you can make. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that openings for careers in education are expected to increase at a rate of 11 per cent within the next ten years as many teachers and educators plan to retire. To help promote a career in education, the Government offers several different scholarships for those in the education sector.

To search through these scholarships, visit the Student Aid office supported by US Government, where there are several links to connect you to scholarships at the federal and state level. These scholarships are based on several factors including those specifically for students entering the educational field of study.

For future librarians, the American Library Association offers several yearly scholarships. For teachers, check out the Phi Delta Kappa International Education Foundation, the Bright Horizons Family Solutions, the Straight Forward Media Teachers Scholarships, the National Board for Professional Teachers Standard Scholarship Fund and the Coca-Cola Teachers School. These are only a few of the hundreds of scholarships dedicated to those in education.

Performing a Scholarship Search

When looking for scholarships in the field of education, it is important to keep all windows open. Although looking into scholarships in the specific field of education is a great way to narrow your search, it is also important to branch out into other scholarships.

The College Board features a search engine that allows you to search through thousands of different scholarships depending on your personal information. This is the best way to ensure you are maximizing your chance to be awarded several scholarships. After all, the more scholarships you apply for, the more chances you will have of being granted a scholarship.

Another great resource is Students.gov, which will provide you with various resources of private scholarships, government grants and scholarship search directories. All of these searches are free and supported by the government to ensure high quality educational information about scholarships.

Educational success does not have to entail high fees. With a scholarship, you can start your post-secondary education ahead of the game and enjoy the financial freedom of scholarship success.
