Civil Engineering
Civil engineers design and oversee the construction of roads, bridges, pipelines, subdivisions, airports, and waste water systems, all the while keeping in mind the project's structural stability, environmental concerns, and cost. Considered one of the oldest types of engineering, civil engineering encompasses a number of sub-specialties, including water resources, structural, environmental, construction, transportation, and geotechnical engineering. Those entering the field must obtain a bachelor's degree in engineering, math or science, and pass a state-mandated licensing examination. For professionals who are creative, curious, analytical, and work well as part of a team, a career in civil engineering has limitless opportunities. Salaries for the median half of those in the profession average between $54,520 and $86,260 per year, and jobs in the field are expected to increase faster than average through the year 2016.
