As the most common way of joining two piece of metal, welding is used in almost every metal manufacturing industry, from automobile and aerospace manufacturing to structural metal production and building construction. The widespread use of welding combined with a reported shortage of qualified welders promises steady employment at anywhere between $10.00 and $24.00 an hour. A degree in welding will teach you a variety of welding methods and metallurgical techniques, as well as blueprint reading and the operation of electrical systems.

Do you have to a high school diploma to become a welder?

If you decide to take a certification course or want an associates degree in this field you will need a high school diploma or equivalent. In general, most welders who work for larger companies, do have a high school diploma. You can do on the job training for independent smaller companies without one. Good luck.

We have provided our list of accredited schools that offer degrees/certification in welding. Unfortunately none are located in South Carolina. We also have provided the American Welding Society's list of schools that are located in South Carolina. Good luck.

In general, if you are a full-time student, you can earn a welding degree in about two years.

How much does it cost to attend school for this degree?

There are a few degree levels that you can obtain in welding. So knowing that, the tuition cost will solely depend on what degree level you choose and will vary from school to school. In general you could spend as little as $12,700 to $25,900.
