Social Sciences Degrees

Social sciences is an interdisciplinary program that includes sociology, political science, economics, psychology, and any other discipline that applies scientific methodology and quantitative analysis to human behavior. The research skills, critical thinking, and ability to recognize and measure statistical patterns that you will develop as a social science student will be valuable in advertising, public policy, and many other careers. The social sciences major is also an excellent choice for students who want to explore a variety of social sciences before choosing a discipline to pursue in greater depth.

Submitted on: April 11, 2012

Individuals with a degree in the social sciences are well-suited to a wide range of jobs. Someone with a degree in sociology could become a social worker in the community or an academic researcher. A political scientist could work for a political campaign or an international think tank. And an economist could teach at a university or be a consultant to a major corporation. Any job that looks at human behavior through a scientific or quantitative lens could fall under the category of the social sciences.

How do the different disciplines in social science help us understand the contemporary society and world?
Submitted on: April 10, 2012

The contemporary world is a complicated place, and one of the ways to understand it accurately is through the social sciences, which examine how people behave and why. Psychologists try to understand the ways that society affects the mind of an individual, and vice versa. Sociologists look at how people behave in groups, and try to make predictions based on scientific and statistical data. Economists deal with the role of finite resources, such as money, food and other goods, in societies. Political scientists understand society in terms of power and influence. Each branch of the social sciences uses analysis and empirical scientific methods to make sense of the social world.
