Social workers help people in a variety of different ways. Individuals in this field may take the form of counselors, group therapists, researchers, or administrators. Those interested in pursuing careers in this field would normally obtain at least a bachelor's degree in social work or a related social science, though counselors are usually required to hold a master's degree. Pay varies based on title and educational background. In 2006, the median annual salaries for social workers ranged from $35,410 to $43,580, depending on the specialty. Experts predict a 22 percent growth in jobs for social workers by 2016.
