Counseling is the practice of providing talk-based therapy to patients. Counselors may take the form of educational or school counselors, rehabilitation specialists, addiction and substance abuse counselors, marriage and family therapists, and mental health counselors. In some cases, a bachelor's degree and special training may be sufficient for one to serve as a counselor, but in most situations, a master's degree in counseling or a related social science is necessary. Licensing requirements for counselors vary by state. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 21 percent increase in jobs in the field of counseling by 2016.
