As one of the broadest engineering specialties, mechanical engineering professionals often work on a wide variety of projects, including the research and development of power-producing machinery, including electric generators, internal combustion engines, and steam and gas turbines. They also design and test new products, such as refrigerators, air-conditioners, machine tools, elevators and escalators, and robots that are used in manufacturing. For students with a solid background in math and science, an analytical mind, and an interest in finding out how things work, mechanical engineering can be a rewarding career. Although job growth in the industry is expected to be slower than average over the next decade—due in part to a decline in employment in the manufacturing industry as a whole—earnings are expected to remain stable, with salaries for those with a bachelor's degree starting at $54,128 per year.
